Solar Paint: An Innovation in Alternative Energy

What if we had a way to spread clean, renewable energy that was as simple as painting it onto your house? Imagine the repercussions of a world where everyone has access to clean energy and we no longer need to devastate the environment for those fossil fuels we rely on.

Thanks to innovative research in the field of clean energy, this vision could be a reality in the future.

Matt Agorist at The Free Thought Project reports that researchers from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia have developed an innovative way to spread renewable energy to everyone: solar paint. This solar paint absorbs water vapor and splits the molecule to separate it into hydrogen, which is our cleanest source of energy. (1)

The research, titled “Surface Water Dependent Properties of Sulfur Rich Molybdenum Sulphides – Electrolyteless Gas Phase Water Splitting” was published in ACS Nano, a journal of the American Chemical Society. (1)

A report on the RMIT website states:

“The paint contains a newly developed compound that acts like silica gel, which is used in sachets to absorb moisture and keep food, medicines and electronics fresh and dry. “But unlike silica gel, the new material, synthetic molybdenum-sulphide, also acts as a semi-conductor and catalyses the splitting of water atoms into hydrogen and oxygen.” (1)

Dr. Torben Daeneke from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia stated:

“We found that mixing the compound with titanium oxide particles leads to a sunlight-absorbing paint that produces hydrogen fuel from solar energy and moist air.

“Titanium oxide is the white pigment that is already commonly used in wall pain, meaning that the simple addition of the new material can convert a brick wall into energy harvesting and fuel production real estate.” (1)

Daeneke states the paint has a “big range of advantages”, including the fact that there’s no need for clean or filtered water to feed system. As long as a place has water vapor in the air, it can produce fuel even if it’s a remote area far from any water. (1)

Another advantage, Matt writes, is that the paint doesn’t require humid climates to function.

“This system”, Daeneke states, “can also be used in very dry but hot climates near oceans. The sea water is evaporated by the hot sunlight and the vapor can then be absorbed to produce fuel”. (1)

Since it can even be used in combustion engines, Matt writes, the solar paint could replace fossil fuels. (1)

According to Daeneke:

“The produced hydrogen can then be directly used either in a fuel cell or in a combustion engine.

“Ultimately we hope that the solar paint might be used alongside traditional solar cells, potentially coating areas that receive too little light to be viably covered with expensive solar cell modules”. (1)

The product will take at least five years to complete but will be “very cheap”, Matt writes. Hydrogen-powered cars and buses already exist, making this solar paint a potentially “powerful source of clean energy in the future”. The best part: you can put it on your house, fence, or anywhere you’d put ordinary paint. You’d have a cheap yet effective source of clean, sustainable energy. (1)

As research into effective alternative energy sources continues, I imagine solar paint will be one of many innovative products we can expect to see in the next twenty years.

Despite the billions of dollars the oil industry makes each year, it’s safe to say fossil fuels are on their way out. Initially, we might have a hard time breaking our dependence on an energy source we’ve been taught to think is the only way we can power our modern lifestyle.

Fortunately, innovations like this solar paint will provide viable alternatives we can all support.
